Volta Quartet

The Volta String Quartet was founded in January 1999 by Joseph Tang (violin), Pierre Lapointe (violin), Scott __/
Chancey (viola) and Garrett Knecht (cello), all students at the University of Ottawa.

. The quartet studies regularly with esteemed artist and University of Ottawa violin professor Calvin Sieb. In
addition the group has had the opportunity to play in a masterclass by the St. Petersburg Quartet.

The Volta Quartet has performed in various venues, including the Embassy of the Russian Federation and the
British High Commission. Upcoming recitals include concerts at the Chateau Laurier, a CBC broadcast and
Tabaret Hall. They will also be performing at the Stowe International Chamber Music Festival in Vermont this
March, in collaboration with internationally known soprano Sandra Graham. The quartet has also been featured
in La Scene Musicale, Canada’s largest guide to classical music.

In July, the quartet was the provincial winner in the Canadian Music Competitions for all categories, and placed
2nd at the National Finals for the ensemble category in Edmonton. In August, they placed 2nd in the Kiwanis
National Finals in Winnipeg. The Quartet has been accepted as the only Canadian quartet to participate in the
8th London International String Quartet Competition this April in London, England, which takes place every
three years.
